SOCLAINE (Maquettes Gamme Soclaine) has been manufacturing wooden period model ship kits since 1980. In that period they have become the leading French manufacturer in the area. The Soclaine range of model ship kits features: All wood construction, pre-cut frames, woods specially chosen for each type of model. Fittings in cast metal, brass and wood, linen cording, silk-screened sails. Detailed plans to scale with diagrams for each stage of assembly.


LE BELEM - French Training Ship 1896
 

The three-masted barq Belem, the last survivor of the great French fleet of full-rigged ships, Cape-Horners and West Indiamen, was built in Nantes as a merchant ship in 1896. Today she is completely restored thanks to the unswerving support of the Caisse d’Epargne Ecuriel, takes on board more than 2000 lovers of the greatest of high seas navigators, the square rigged vessel.

LA RECOUVRANCE - French Frigate 1817


La Recouvrance is a magnifi cent trisail frigate built on the plans of the Iris (1817) by the naval architect Hubert. After plying against the slave trade from Senegal, she cruised to Antilles and Brazil. Originally fi tted out to a remarkable level at Rochefort in 1829, she ended her career in 1844 at Toulon.

LE RENARD - French Corsair Cutter 1812
 

Experienced and adventurous sailor Robert Surcouf commis-sioned “Le Renard” in 1812. It is a 70 ton cutter, armed with 10 carronades and 4 guns. The crew consisted of 46 men. On the 9th of September 1813, Le Renard victoriously led the last corsair combat. The ship was put to chase by the English ship “Alphea”, better armed with 16 guns and a fi rst rate crew of 80 offi cers and men. The ensuing action included a nigh engagement.

LE TONNANT - French Privateer 1793
 

In the last quarter of the 18th century, privateers were generally small fast merchant vessels. Carrying a large area of sail and highly armed with small calibre guns, unlike “pirate” ships, these vessels fl ew their national flag.

LES TROIS FRERES - Morbihan Fishing Boat 1943
 

A typical French fi shing craft from the Gulf of Morbihan region of Brittany, built in 1943. She was restored by a local group and in 1983 was listed as a historic monument. At the beginning of the 20th century some 300 vessels of this kind were active along the Breton coasts, some remaining in service until the 1960’s.

noticeable by the horse at the stern, which received the lowered masts once the
vessel arrived at the fishing grounds.

YANN ET GAEL - Cameret Fishing Boat 1927
 

A particularly well built boat to a fi ne design. These crafts were excellent under
sail in any weather. Although their history spanned barely a hundred years, a
great many were built. It was not a rare sight to see up to eighty boats out working
together. The last boat disappeared after the second world war.

ST GILDAS - Groix Tuna Boat 1908
 

'This was the last generation of a type of ketch seen off the Atlantic coast of France until the 1930s. These 60 ton vessels with their large sails, carried a crew of 10-12 men who fished for tuna with long rods or “tangons”.
